Microsoft 365 Exchange Online backup

VaultFuzion backs up Exchange Online mailboxes agentlessly through the Microsoft Graph API — mail, calendars, contacts and the in-place archive — with item-level and point-in-time restore in three modes, into storage you own. It also captures the 1:1 and private-channel Teams chats that Microsoft keeps inside the user mailbox.

What gets captured

Mail, in every folder

Messages and folder structure across the primary mailbox, preserving the hierarchy so a restore lands where the item belongs.

Calendar and contacts

Calendar items including recurring series and their individual exceptions, plus the contact cards most backups quietly skip.

In-place archive

The online archive mailbox, captured alongside the primary — not an afterthought bolted on later.

Mailbox-stored Teams chats

The 1:1 and private-channel Teams messages Microsoft stores in the user mailbox are captured here, not in the Teams workload.

How restore works

“Restore it” is three operations with opposite blast radii. Side-by-side puts recovered mail in a separate folder and touches nothing live — the safe default. In-place merges the backup into the live mailbox. Exact-state reverts the mailbox to a chosen point in time; on the mail path it soft-deletes to Deleted Items rather than hard-purging, so a reverted item stays recoverable while the deleted-items window is open. You choose the grain too — one message, a folder, a calendar, or the whole mailbox.

The honest part

Point-in-time is arithmetic, not magic: your restore granularity is bounded by how often you capture. A message that arrived and was deleted between two captures was never in a backup at all — which is a reason to know your backup frequency before an incident, not during one. A Microsoft litigation hold preserves the mailbox in place, but it is not an independent copy and does not survive the loss of the tenant, the licence or the account; an external backup in a bucket you own is the control that does.

Frequently asked questions

What does VaultFuzion back up in Exchange Online?

The whole mailbox: email in every folder, the calendar (including recurring series and their exceptions), contacts, and the in-place archive. It also captures the 1:1 and private-channel Teams chats that Microsoft stores inside the user mailbox. Capture is agentless through the Microsoft Graph API — nothing is installed on a device.

Can I restore a single email, or only a whole mailbox?

Either. You can restore an individual message, a folder, a calendar or a full mailbox, from any point in time you captured.

What are the restore modes?

Three: side-by-side (recovered mail lands in a separate folder, nothing live is touched), in-place (merges into the live mailbox) and exact-state (reverts the mailbox to a chosen point in time). On the mail path, exact-state soft-deletes to Deleted Items rather than hard-purging, so it stays recoverable.

Does a Microsoft litigation hold already cover this?

A hold preserves the mailbox in place, but it is not a second, independent copy and it does not help if the tenant, the licence or the account is lost. An external backup in storage you own is a different control, and the two are complementary.

How current is a restore?

Restore granularity is bounded by backup frequency: a point-in-time restore returns one of the points you actually captured, not an arbitrary second. Anything created and deleted between two captures was never in a backup.

Where is the backup stored?

In your own S3-compatible bucket (bring-your-own-storage): you pick the region and own the data and egress. Direct customers can use a bucket VaultFuzion provides, billed at cost.
