Microsoft 365 Teams backup

VaultFuzion backs up Microsoft Teams agentlessly through the Microsoft Graph API — channel messages, the files shared in channels, and the Microsoft 365 Group behind each team — into storage you own. Teams is the workload where honesty about restore matters most, so this page is explicit about what comes back in place and what comes back as an export.

What gets captured

Channel messages

Standard-channel conversations, captured for the record and for export — the audit trail of how a decision was actually made.

Channel files

Files shared in channels live in the team’s SharePoint site; they are backed up through the SharePoint path and restore item-level, like any document.

Mailbox-stored chats

1:1 and private-channel chats live in each user’s mailbox, so the Exchange backup covers them — a different workload, the same protection.

What restore actually looks like

Files come back in place. Because Teams stores channel files in SharePoint and chat attachments in OneDrive, a Teams file restore is a SharePoint or OneDrive restore — item-level, point-in-time, reliable.
Messages come back as an export, not an in-place rewrite. Channel messages and Microsoft 365 Group conversation threads are captured and exportable, but Microsoft exposes no application permission to write those threads back into Teams. That is a platform limit, not a product one: no app-only backup vendor can restore a Teams conversation in place, and any that claims to is worth a hard question. Export covers what a conversation is usually needed for — eDiscovery, legal hold, and the record.

The honest part

The useful question for any Teams backup is not “do you back up Teams” — everyone says yes — but “which parts restore in place, and which are export-only?” VaultFuzion’s answer: files in place, messages and Group threads by export. Said plainly, before an incident, so nobody discovers the Graph API’s limits mid-restore.

Frequently asked questions

What does VaultFuzion back up in Microsoft Teams?

Standard channel messages and the files shared in channels, plus Microsoft 365 Group content behind the team. The 1:1 and private-channel chats live inside each user’s mailbox, so they are captured by the Exchange backup rather than here — which means they are covered, just through a different workload.

Can VaultFuzion restore a Teams chat or channel conversation?

Channel files restore exactly like SharePoint content, because that is where Teams stores them. Channel messages and Microsoft 365 Group conversation threads are backed up and exportable, but Microsoft exposes no application permission to write those threads back into Teams — so no app-only backup vendor can restore a conversation in place. Any vendor claiming in-place Teams chat restore is worth a hard follow-up question.

Where are Teams files actually stored, and does that matter?

Channel files live in the team’s SharePoint site and chat attachments in the sender’s OneDrive. VaultFuzion backs those up through the SharePoint and OneDrive paths, so a Teams file restore is a SharePoint/OneDrive restore — reliable and item-level.

So how do I get a conversation back if I cannot restore it in place?

Through export: the captured messages are exportable for eDiscovery, legal hold and the record, which is what a conversation is usually needed for. The honest framing is capture-and-export for messages, full restore for files — not a promise the Graph API cannot keep.

Is capture agentless?

Yes — through the Microsoft Graph API, from one multi-tenant console, with nothing installed on a device.

Where is the backup stored?

In your own S3-compatible bucket (bring-your-own-storage): you choose the region and own the data and egress. Direct customers can use a bucket VaultFuzion provides, billed at cost.
